Get Growing Courses

The Get Growing course is an eight week outdoor hands-on course taught at the Food4Families Whitley GrowAllot community garden (Meavy Gardens, RG2 7RD) – less than 10 minutes drive from Reading town centre.

The course will enable you to learn over the growing season in a friendly supportive atmosphere, and get advice and support on putting new skills into practice. It will give you the skills you need to start successfully growing in a garden, allotment or containers on a balcony. From the start you will have the chance to get your hands dirty at our community allotment veg beds and learn as you grow. Tools, seeds and equipment are provided. You will learn:

  • organising your plot and making beds
  • sowing and propagation
  • composting and maintaining fertility
  • rainwater harvesting and conservation
  • controlling weeds, pests and diseases
  • harvesting, storing and collecting seeds
  • pruning for beginners

You will also receive a comprehensive course manual packed with advice and useful contacts.

One-off courses

We also run one-off courses throughout the year. These last just three hours on a Saturday morning and develop specialist skills such as:

  • planning your sustainable garden
  • planning your garden year
  • propagation
  • gardening with your children
