Summary

Newbridge Nursery is located in lower Caversham on Montague Street. It is lucky to have plenty of outdoor space for the children there to use.

In spring 2011 Food 4 Families started running regular sessions, which currently run on Tuesday lunchtimes (11.30am – 12.30pm), to allow parents to also enjoy the space alongside their children and to start to learn about growing-their-own.

Food 4 Families has built 3 raised beds using old scaffold boards. At one of the Saturday morning Dad’s sessions that the nursery run (Family Man) the children had great fun filling up one of the beds with soil, using little wheelbarrows just like the big ones used by Dad!

At the Friday lunchtime sessions the families have been really busy sowing lots of seeds. We started off in March doing herbs, chillis and tomatoes which are now growing happily at the children’s homes. We planted potatoes at the nursery and now also have peas, beans, courgettes, pumpkins and tomatoes growing.

All the seeds, pots, compost and tools required are provided by Food4Families at these sessions. Children and their carers just need to turn up and get gardening!
